Geologist

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Develops, implements, and updates the geology and minerals portion of the BLM planning documents as well as other software and data tracking systems. Provides written and oral assistance to the public, contractors, operators, and staff on questions concerning laws and regulations. Provides technical expertise in formulating surface protection stipulations, standards, and mitigating measures to reduce the adverse impacts of surface disturbing activities. Reviews and provides technical and environmental oversight of proposed and existing mining plans of operation, geothermal exploration and development, and abandoned mine land remediation projects. Conducts field inspections and writes inspection reports at regular intervals of the mineral material, geothermal and locatable mineral projects on public lands. Maintains accurate and up-to-date case files and records. To be eligible for this position, you must meet one of the Basic Requirements AND the Additional Qualification Requirement. Basic Requirements:
Have a successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. OR Have a combination of education and experience, that includes course work as shown in A above 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. PLUS, appropriate experience or additional education related to this position. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in one of the fields stated in A above. This combination must be sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of a professional Geologist. NOTE:

Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service performing duties such as:
(1) assisting in developing environmental documents on free use permits, material sales, and mining plans of operation; (2) helping with inspecting mining operations to ensure compliance; (3) maintaining relationships with state and federal agencies concerning with mineral management programs; and (4) assisting with writing reports and recommendations regarding mineral issues.OR Have 1 full year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. The superior academic achievement provision is applicable to all occupations covered by this standard. See the General Policies and Instructions for specific guidance on applying the superior academic achievement provision.OR Have a combination of graduate education and professional experience. Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. Specialized Experience GS-09:
Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing duties such as:
(1) writing reports and recommendations regarding mineral issues in support of other activities or proposals; (2) consulting with landowners, operators, and field employees to carry out the minerals program; (3) inspecting mining operations to ensure compliance with plan and performance standard; and (4) participating in interdisciplinary team projects for minerals related actions.OR Have 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.OR Have a combination of education and professional experience. Specialized Experience GS-11:
Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing duties such as:
(1) preparing reports and appraisals on mineral leases, sales, and mining operations for adequacy; (2) addressing the public on questions concerning the laws, regulations, and policy governing all aspects of mineral resources; (3) providing technical expertise in formulating surface protection stipulations, standards, and mitigating measures to reduce the adverse impact of surface disturbing activities; and (4) reviewing mining notices and plans of operations for regulatory and technical adequacy.OR Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.OR Have a combination of education and professional experience. Physical Demands:
The work includes both office and field conditions. Office work involves long periods of intense concentration on technical details. Most field work requires a certain amount of physical stamina and is often under a variety of arduous conditions, including travel by vehicle, all train vehicles (ATVs), or foot over rugged, slippery, and/or hazardous terrain, exposure to adverse temperature and weather conditions, as well as physiographic extremes. The individuals may be required to perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples. Work Environment:
When in the office, the position is physically located in close proximity to a number of other professional employees, and must tolerate and average amount of conversation, telephone and other similar office distractions and background noise. Office quarters are located in a modern office building and tend to be open space arrangements. Field conditions include the full range of topographic conditions, ranging from rolling plains to a steep mountainous terrain. Incumbent will, on occasion, be required to enter surface and underground mines and tolerate high/low temperatures, dust and high levels of noise and vibration. Safety clothing such as safety boots, googles, etc. are required to be worn. During winter months temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit can be expected, while during the summer temperatures in excess of +110 degrees Fahrenheit are not uncommon. The incumbent may subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
