Law Enforcement Ranger
Law Enforcement Rangers patrol the public lands performing law enforcement duties. These duties include but are not limited to investigating, apprehending, detaining, arresting, or prosecuting and/or include:
detection, issuing citations; transporting prisoners to detention facilities, and prosecuting violators of a variety of law enforcement laws, rules, and regulations that have been enacted to insure the protection and safe use of Bureau facilities and resources. In addition, local law enforcement officers, such as county sheriff deputies, assist the BLM in patrolling popular recreation sites. They provide radio dispatch and other services that help protect the public and the land's natural and cultural resources. Law enforcement personnel perform a wide variety of tasks, including Protecting cultural and historical sites from vandalism, Locating and eradicating drug-manufacturing laboratories and marijuana fields, Wildland fire investigations Guarding against the dumping of hazardous wastes and other pollutants, Preventing theft and damage of timber, rare cactus plants, minerals, and other valuable publicly-owned resources. Physical Demands:
The incumbent must be able to safely utilize firearms, non-lethal weapons, and defensive tactics in the conduct of daily activities. The work requires considerable strenuous physical exertion, e.g., long periods of standing, crawling, walking and running over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces and through wooded or brush areas, performing these activities day or night, when the incumbent may be required to respond immediately from a sedentary activity to an extremely arduousactivity.The duties of this position are so rigorous that a physical examination is required to ensure that the employee assigned can perform the duties without physical injury to self or others. Employees must meet the arduous physical and medical standards identified in BLM law enforcement policy.The incumbent must be prepared, at all times, to defend himself/herself and others against physical and armed attack, including the use of physical violence or, as a last resort, deadly force.Work Environment:
Work is performed both in an office setting and outdoors with exposure to hazardous and environmentally adverse conditions. Fieldwork is normally performed alone in isolated areas and for extended periods of time. Many investigations occur in isolated areas of the public lands. This type of work involves potentially high risks with personal exposure to dangerous situations, including possible physical attack or other uncontrollable conditions.The incumbent is regularly exposed to temperature and weather extremes, and will travel on foot or by specialty vehicles, e.g., four-wheel drive, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles, aircraft, or horseback to these remote locations to gather evidence and to arrest violators. Specialized Experience Requirements:
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must be been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. To qualify at the GL-09 level:
Applicants must have year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL-07 level in the Federal service. To be creditable, work experience must illustrate progressively responsible experience in an administrative field, in this case, law enforcement administration, which clearly demonstrates the ability to handle all aspects of the position, i.e., investigations, apprehension, enforcement of the criminal laws and regulations of the United States that relate to the public lands and resources, in a multiple-use, natural resources management setting, should meet the definition of specialized experience for this position; this includes participating in incidental natural resource management activities.Substitution of Education in Lieu of Specialized
Experience:
In lieu of specialized experience, applicants may substitute their education. Qualifying education at the GL-09 includes successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or a LL.B or J.D if related that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work, e.g. law enforcement, police administration, criminology or criminal justice. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements. Selective Placement Factors:
This position requires special qualifications that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor will be rated not qualified. Prior experience as a law enforcement officer carrying out duties involving the investigation, apprehension, and/or detention of persons suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal law of the United States is a basic qualification of this position. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
